Mezzo-Soprano

Karolina Csáthy is in regular demand as a choral and solo singer and has performed across four continents in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (Australia), St Matthias Church (Budapest), the Stockey Centre (Canada), Hong Kong Cultural Centre and many more as well featuring on seven albums with Hyperion.

Karolina began singing lessons with Jenny Jonas during secondary school and later attended a choral residential course with The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, changing the course of her life: in 2015 she was offered a place to read Music at Trinity College as well as a choral scholarship under Stephen Layton.

Alongside the choir, Karolina performed solo roles in The Rape of Lucretia (Britten), The Rake’s Progress (Stravinsky), Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck), L’Orfeo, (Monteverdi), Suor Angelica, (Puccini) and Die Zauberflöte (Mozart). Other highlights include Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and a world première of Stephane Crayton’s Winter Pass in King’s College Chapel.

After graduation, Karolina was awarded the Postgraduate Vocal Studies Fund, which enabled her to sing as a lay clerk with the choir whilst continuing her vocal studies with Sheila Barnes. Since university, she has sung for distinguished conductors such as David Hill, Robert Hollingworth and Owain Park. She has enjoyed solo appearances including Handel’s Messiah and Vivaldi’s Gloria and looks forward to performing the Palmeri Misa a Buenos Aires in December and Mozart’s Requiem early next year. From January 2025 she will sing as a permanent lay clerk of the Choir of St Albans cathedral, making her the first woman in history to be appointed for this post.

Karolina has actively participated in masterclasses with Susan Gritton, David Jones, Mary Plazas, Patricia Rozario and currently studies with Zita Váradi.

Transcendentally sublime, the delirious melismas and arches of Hildegard von Bingen’s Ave Maria, O autrix vite made for a spell-casting, resonating highlight, Karolina’s liquid soprano blending mellifluously, eternally, with Guy [James]’s vocals
